Go to the chemical classifications section of the ATSDR’s the link is below . Have you ever been exposed to one of these chemicals? If so, how did it happen? Did it cause any symptoms? If you have not, which chemical do you feel is the most dangerous that you would try to protect your friends and family from exposure?

Question one

You are the instructor for a group of first responders. In your own words, how would you describe the periodic table of elements in a way that can help them understand the chemical and physical characteristics of chemicals that could be part of an incident to which they have to respond?

Your response must be at least 200 words in length.

QUESTION 2

There are certain trends recognized on the periodic table depending on the element’s location on the table. Categorize these different trends in relation to what is the reason for the trend on the periodic table.

Your response must be at least 200 words in length.

Question 3

Analyze the differences between ionic and covalent bonds, and discuss why it is important for a responder to know the difference.

Your response must be at least 200 words in length.

QUESTION 4

Explain the ionization of molecules and why it is important to responders to a hazardous materials incident.

Your response must be at least 200 words in length

Instructions

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, many common household products are used for the purpose of getting high, especially by children and adolescents. Many of these chemicals include gases used as propellants. Based on your opinion, should we ban these chemicals and only deal with organic types of cleaners like mild soaps, lemon juice, etc.?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Journal 4

Identify a chemical reaction that you noticed firsthand, a precipitation, acid/base or oxidation/reduction reaction and discuss how it was controlled. This could be as simple as chemicals mixing in your household by accident, or the chemical reaction of fireworks being lit, etc. Explain which type of reaction you saw. Did you ever feel unsafe during the reaction?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Identify a chemical in your home or office that is an inorganic chemical. What precautions would you take if this chemical spilled in your home or office? Consider people potentially exposed to the chemical, and think of preserving property and the environment.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Journal 6

Instructions

What is the most dangerous organic hydrocarbon you have ever come into contact with? Remember, hydrocarbons are everywhere, from cigarette smoke to gasoline. Are there any other precautions you will take when handling these chemicals in the future based on what you have learned so far?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary

Journal 7

Instructions

After reading the tools of the trade chapter where the textbook talks about the many different sampling meters and tools, which tool do you think is the most important? Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Unit 8

Instructions

In other words, what is your fear that involves a WMD event in your community? How would you try to prevent the event from happening in the first place?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary
